Gravel, Cracked Strips or Tired Tar?
Gravel that ends up in the house. Concrete strips that cracked years ago. Tar that’s gone grey, crazed and potholed, or a car park that floods every winter. Most of these can be fixed without starting from scratch.
What we tar
Driveways, Parking Areas and Access Roads in Tar
Tar Driveways
New tar driveways on a compacted base, laid to fall so rainwater runs to the street, not the garage.
Parking Areas
Tarred parking for shops, churches, schools and Main Road businesses, quoted in writing for owners and trustees.
Commercial pavingComplex Roads and Visitor Bays
Internal roads and visitor parking for sectional-title complexes, with a written quote your trustees can approve.
Tar With a Paver Edge
A tar driveway finished with a clay or cement paver border, or paving at the front door. One crew, one quote.

New Tar, an Overlay, or a Patch?
New tar from the ground up
For gravel, bare ground, or a driveway whose base has failed. We dig out to firm ground, build and compact a new base, then surface it in hot-mix asphalt.
An overlay on tired tar
If the old tar is cracked and faded but still level and firm, a new layer over the top costs far less than starting again.
Patching potholes and edges
The broken section is cut out, the ground under it is made good, and the patch is finished level with the rest.
When it needs more than a new top
Push a screwdriver into a soft patch, or watch where water sits after rain. If the surface gives, or the same dip fills every time, the problem is below the tar. That section has to be dug out and rebuilt before anything goes on top.

R10,800 – R19,200
New asphalt surface on a sound base
R12,000 – R23,200

What pushes a tar quote up
- How much base work the ground needs
- Access for the truck and roller
- Small areas (dearer per m²)
- Thicker asphalt for heavy vehicles
- Kerbs and channel drains
Tar or paving
Tar or Paving: Which Costs Less Over Time?
Here’s how the two compare on the things people ask us about.
Our take
Covering a big area for the least money: tar. A short driveway where kerb appeal matters: pavers, or tar finished with a paver border. Not sure? Ask for both prices on one quote.
We lay hot-mix asphalt for driveways and car parks, and we’ll tell you after the site visit whether tar or paving suits yours better.
Construction
What Goes Under New Tar
A dug-out, compacted base
Soft material comes out and a stone base goes in, compacted in layers. The depth is set after we have seen the ground, and it is written on your quote.
Priming
A primer seals the base and helps the surface bond to it.
Firm edges
Concrete kerbs, a paver border, or a tapered edge into the garden, so the sides don’t crumble.
Falls
Levels are set so water runs off the surface, with a channel drain where it can’t.

Local knowledge
Tarring in Plumstead: Local Considerations
Level driveways
Where a driveway has very little natural slope, the fall has to be built into the base so water runs to the street or a drain.
Kerb crossings
Paving or tarring a new entrance over the verge can need City of Cape Town approval, which the property owner applies for. We’ll flag it at the site visit.

Questions
Tar Surfacing FAQs
A published 2026 Cape Town guide gives R270 to R480 per m² on a sound base, and R300 to R580 fully installed with base preparation.
Usually, for the same area, especially big driveways and car parks. Compare quotes on the same scope: a tar price without base work isn’t comparable with a paving price that includes it.
A published 2026 Cape Town guide gives 15 to 20 years for hot-mix asphalt. What decides it is the base, the drainage and how quickly cracks are dealt with.
Often. If the driveway is still level and firm underfoot, a new layer can go over it. If it’s dipping or soft, the base under those sections is rebuilt first, then the whole driveway is surfaced.
Gravel can be shaped and compacted into the base. Cracked concrete is usually broken out first.
It needs dry weather, so jobs are booked around the rain, and a winter date can move if a cold front comes through.
Yes, with a written quote that owners, trustees or a managing agent can approve.
