A Back Garden You Don’t Use?
Sand blowing into the house. Old paving that rocks underfoot. A braai on a lawn that turns to mud by June. A patio sorts out all three, if it’s laid at the right level for the house.
What we pave
Patios, Braai Areas and Paths We Pave
-
Back-garden patios
An outdoor floor off the lounge or kitchen, so the table can stay outside all summer.
-
Braai areas
Paving around a built-in or portable braai, with room to stand, cook and put things down.
-
Courtyards and side passages
Narrow, shaded spaces along the house, laid so water runs away from the walls.
-
Garden paths
From the patio to the gate, the washing line or the pool.
-
Patio and pool together
The pool surround, coping and patio, laid as one job. See pool paving.
Materials
Clay, Cement, Cobble or Stone? Patio Materials We Lay
Source: Fonster 2026 pricing guide (Western Cape).
Pavers are laid in herringbone, stretcher bond or basket weave, often with a contrasting border. Stone, travertine and porcelain are laid to suit the slab size, and we bring samples of each to the site visit.
Planning
Room for the Table, Space for the Braai
Mark It Out on the Lawn
Put the table and chairs where you’d like them, add the braai, and walk around the lot. Four pegs at the corners give you the size. WhatsApp us a photo with the pegs in and we’ll book your site visit.
Grease and Ash
Every braai drops fat and ash, and the palest paving shows it first. A darker paver at the braai end hides it better.
The Side That Gets No Sun
If part of the patio sits under a tree or against a south-facing wall, it’s the last part to dry after rain. That’s where moss starts, so it needs scrubbing more often.
Matching What’s Already There
If the driveway or pool surround is paved, we can match the paver or the border colour so the patio looks like it belongs, as long as the range is still made.
Levels
Where the Patio Meets the House
Falls
The patio slopes gently away from the doors, so rain runs into the garden, not under the sliding door.
Low enough at the walls
The top of the paving finishes under the damp-proof course, the waterproof layer near the bottom of your walls, so puddles and splash don’t wet the bricks above it.
High ground at the door
Where soil has built up against the house, we dig it down rather than raise the paving.
Somewhere for the water to go
Onto a lawn or a bed, or into a channel drain where there’s nowhere else.
Pricing
Patio Paving Prices (2026)
Market ranges, not our price list. Source: Fonster, Paving Costs in South Africa: 2026 Pricing Guide, Western Cape prices (July 2026, checked 2 Nov 2026).
Your quote
Smaller patios usually cost more per m², because setting up, edging and cutting don’t shrink with the area.
What moves the price
- Breaking out an old slab or paving
- Steps and level changes
- Lots of cuts (curves, a built-in braai, drain covers)
- How far the pavers have to be carried from the street
- Borders and patterns
- Stone or porcelain instead of pavers

How it works
From Bare Ground to First Braai
-
Site Visit and Quote
We measure, check the levels against the house and show you paver samples.
-
Dig Out and Base
Old paving, slab or lawn comes out, and the base is compacted in layers. The depth is set after we have seen the ground and written on your quote.
-
Edges, Laying and Cutting
Edge restraints are set, then the pavers go down in your pattern and are cut to fit.
-
Jointing and Handover
Jointing sand is brushed in and compacted, the site is cleaned, and we walk the patio with you. A 30 m² patio usually takes 2 to 4 days.
Repairs
Already Have a Patio That’s Gone Wrong?
Not every tired patio needs new pavers. Send a photo of what you’ve noticed.
It dips where people walk
If the pavers are still whole, they come up, the ground under them is put right, and the same pavers go back down. See paving repairs.
Puddles by the back door
Part of the patio has sunk or was never sloped enough. That part is relaid at a new level.
Green, weedy or stained
Often a clean and new jointing sand brushed in, not a new patio.
A cracked slab underneath
A cracked or sunken slab usually comes out, so the paving sits on a proper base. We check it at the site visit.

Questions
Patio Paving FAQs
A 2026 Western Cape pricing guide puts a 30 m² patio or braai area in cement or simulated cobble pavers at about R12,000 to R22,000, base and edging included. Natural stone comes to about R25,000 to R45,000.
Pick from the darker end of the range for the braai corner. We bring samples to hold up next to your braai at the site visit.
Yes. What matters is height and slope: the finished paving must sit under the damp-proof course and run downhill away from the house. We check both at the site visit.
We decide that on site, after looking at the old surface and how it drains.
We don’t seal pavers. Keeping the joints full and brushing the patio clean is the upkeep. For natural stone or travertine, we’ll talk you through its upkeep at the site visit.
50mm pavers for patios and paths. Tell us if a car or trailer will ever park on it, and we’ll quote 60mm with a deeper base.
A 30 m² patio usually takes 2 to 4 days. It depends on the size, how much has to be broken out, and any steps.
