Stepping Round It, or Parking Round It?

A dip by the gate that everyone steps around. A paver that clacks every time the car rolls over it. Rain that heads for the back door instead of the street. Send us a photo before the next cold front.

What Does Your Paving Look Like Now?

Each card: what you see, the photo that helps us most, and the usual fix.

  • A dip in the wheel tracks

Photo tip: crouch at one end and shoot along the driveway so the dip shows.

Usual fix: lift that strip, rebuild what’s under it, put the same pavers back.

  • Pavers that rock or clack

Photo tip: a short video while you press each one with your foot.

Usual fix: the loose patch comes up and goes back down tight on new sand.

  • Empty joints and weeds

Photo tip: a close-up with a coin for scale.

Usual fix: when nothing has sunk, often just a weed treatment and new jointing sand brushed in.

  • An edge creeping into the flowerbed

Photo tip: shoot the edge from the side.

Usual fix: a new, fixed edge along that side, then the gaps pulled tight.

  • Lifted by a tree root

Photo tip: get the tree in the shot too.

Usual fix: we cut back small roots ourselves (a big tree goes to a tree specialist), relevel underneath and relay.

  • Water against the wall

Photo tip: after rain, or with a hosepipe running.

Usual fix: relay that strip sloping towards the garden or street.

  • Cracked or broken pavers

Photo tip: one close-up and one wide shot, so we can match the colour.

Usual fix: swapped for the nearest match.

  • Potholes or broken edges in tar

Photo tip: a wide shot of the whole surface, so we can see whether more is about to go.

Usual fix: patched. See tar surfacing.

  • Cracked concrete

Photo tip: a wide shot of the whole strip or slab.

Usual fix: we don’t patch cracked concrete. It’s broken out and replaced with paving or tar.

Causes

What Usually Sits Behind It

A soft or thin base

Pavers drop where the weight goes: wheel tracks, the bin corner, the gate.

Water underneath

A downpipe emptying onto the paving, or a leaking pipe below it, washes out what’s underneath.

Nothing holding the edges

Without a firm edge, pavers slowly walk outwards.

An old trench

Paving put back over a loosely filled pipe or cable trench drops along its line.

Roots

A growing root lifts a line of pavers.

Your options

Fix a Patch, Re-lay the Lot, or Start Again

Fix a Patch

When the trouble is in one or two places and the rest is flat and firm.

Re-lay the Lot

When it dips in many places but the pavers are whole. No new pavers to buy unless some break on the way up.

Start Again

When pavers are crumbling, broken across the area, or too thin for the cars parked on them. See driveway paving.

Our homepage has a condition-by-condition re-lay or replace guide.

Tar

Tar Patching

Potholes

The broken tar is cut back to a firm edge, the ground beneath is made good, and the hole is filled with hot-mix asphalt and rolled level.

Crumbling edges

Tar edges with nothing beside them break away into the garden. A kerb or paver border stops it.

When patches won’t hold

If the whole surface is cracked like crazy paving, patching is money spent twice. An overlay or new tar is the fix. See tar surfacing.

Your pavers

Matching What’s Already There

Whole pavers go back in where they came out. For broken ones, send a close-up and we’ll match the range where it’s still made. If the colour has been discontinued, we’ll show you the nearest option before it goes in. Want the whole area to look the same age? Add a clean to the quote.

Whole ones go back down. Broken ones are replaced with the same range where it’s still made, or the closest match.

If your own pavers go back, usually not. If new ones are going in, ask us to price a clean of the whole area too.

Something keeps feeding it: water from a downpipe or a pipe, ground that was never firmed, or a trench underneath. We trace that before quoting.

Yes. The trench is compacted in layers before the pavers go back. A 2026 Western Cape guide puts relaying over trench work at R300 to R500 per m².

Yes, potholes and broken edges, patched with hot-mix asphalt and quoted per job. See tar surfacing.
