Pool Paving in Plumstead and the Southern Suburbs
We lay new pool surrounds and coping, and re-lay surrounds that have sunk, across Plumstead and Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs, in clay brick, cement pavers and cobbles. A 2026 Western Cape pricing guide puts a pool surround in non-slip, salt-resistant pavers at R450 to R900 per m². WhatsApp us a photo for a written quote.

Sunken, Slippery or Too Hot to Stand On?
A corner tipping towards the water. Pavers you tiptoe across when they’re wet. A surround too hot for bare feet by lunchtime in January. Send a photo: some of these need a re-lay or a clean, not a new surround.
What we do
Pool Surrounds We Lay and Fix
-
After the Pool Builder Leaves
We start once the pool builder has finished, and build the base up in compacted layers before any paver goes down.
-
When the Surround Has Sunk Towards the Water
We lift the sunken section, rebuild what’s under it and relay it with a fresh fall away from the water. Whole pavers go back in, and we bring a sample to match any broken ones.
-
Coping
The capping along the top of the pool wall, where you sit with your feet in the water. We lay bullnose or brick-on-edge coping, and lift and replace old coping that has cracked or come loose.
-
Pool, Patio and Braai as One Area
Paving that carries on past the pool to the table and the braai, in the same paver or with a matching border. See patio paving.
Materials
Pavers, Stone or Porcelain Beside the Water
A published 2026 Western Cape guide puts natural stone at R850 to R1,500 per m² installed. Travertine and porcelain are quoted per job.
Choosing
Before You Pick a Paver
The Wet-Foot Test
Pour water over a sample and stand on it barefoot. A textured or rough-cast face holds; a smooth one doesn’t. We bring samples to the site visit, your quote names the exact paver, and we can get you the manufacturer’s slip rating for it.
The Midday Test
Leave a sample in full sun beside the pool and touch it at lunchtime. Pale greys and buffs stay comfortable; charcoal and dark red don’t.
Salt Pools
If your pool is salt-chlorinated, we read the paver maker’s guidance for pool use before we quote, and name the paver on the quote.
Levels
Levels at the Water’s Edge
Falling away from the pool
The surround slopes gently outwards, so splash and garden dirt run into the garden, not into the water.
Where the paving meets the coping
The last row of pavers is set so water off the surround can’t run back over the coping into the pool.
Around the skimmer and steps
The skimmer lid still has to lift out once the paving is down, so the pavers around it, and around the pool steps, are cut with that in mind.
Pricing
Pool Paving Prices (2026)
Market ranges, not our price list. Source: Fonster, Paving Costs in South Africa: 2026 Pricing Guide, Western Cape prices (July 2026, checked 2 Nov 2026).
Worked example
For a 25 m² surround:
R11,250 – R22,500
At the published range. The guide’s pool-surround figure doesn’t mention coping, so coping is quoted on its own line.
What moves the price
- Removing the old surround and rubble
- New or replaced coping
- Cuts at the skimmer, the steps and a curved pool edge
- How far everything has to be carried from the street
- Natural stone or porcelain instead of pavers

How it works
Working Next to a Full Pool
-
Site Visit and Quote
We check the levels, the coping and how water drains off the surround now.
-
Protecting the Water
The pool is covered with a sheet so sand and offcuts stay out. The water level is lowered only when coping is replaced.
-
Base, Falls and Laying
The old surround comes up, the base is compacted, and the pavers go down falling away from the pool. The base depth is set at the site visit and written on your quote.
-
Jointing and Handover
Joints are filled with polymeric jointing sand, which stays put when it gets wet, and the surround is cleaned down before we walk it with you. The schedule is agreed on your quote.
Upkeep
Green, Stained or Sinking? Keeping It Right
Green in the shade
Algae on a shaded surround is a slip risk for wet feet, not just a look. A regular scrub keeps it down.
Leaves from the neighbour’s tree
Leaves left in wet corners stain pale pavers.
A corner that has dropped
That section is lifted and relaid on a firm base. See paving repairs.

Pool Paving FAQs
A 2026 Western Cape pricing guide puts a pool surround in non-slip, salt-resistant pavers at R450 to R900 per m², with falls away from the pool. Coping is quoted as its own line.
Ones with a textured or rough-cast face. Do the wet-foot test with a sample at the site visit; your quote then names the paver you chose. We can get the manufacturer’s slip rating for it.
Not in a pale colour. Charcoal and dark red pavers get hot in summer sun; try the midday test with a sample.
We read the paver maker’s guidance for salt pools before we quote, and name the paver on your quote.
Not while we work. The pool stays covered until handover. The water level only drops if we’re replacing the coping.
Yes, if it’s sound. We check how the coping and surround meet at the site visit, and replace coping that has cracked or come loose.
We don’t seal pavers. Polymeric jointing sand and a regular scrub of shaded corners keep a surround in shape. For natural stone or travertine, we’ll talk you through its upkeep at the site visit.
